Maryculter has long associations with the Knights Templar, being gifted the land by William the Lion in 1187. In the grounds of Maryculture House (now a Hotel) are the ruins of a Knights Templar chapel. Four yews grow within the ruins and the measurements of some of them suggest they could be 300-400 years old. There are also some yews within the grounds of the House, one of which shown here has some interesting multi-stemmed morphology.
