Malleny Gardens is managed by the National Trust for Scotland. The first known house built here was in 1478 but there are records of an estate here dating back to 1330. The present Malleny House was built in 1637 by Sir James Murray.

One of its most famous features is ‘the Four Evangelists – huge 400 year old clipped yew trees’. There were 12 yew trees here originally and it is said they were planted to represent the 12 apostles, but 8 were removed in the 20th century when redesign of the gardens took place.

The remaining yews grow in a tight square and are clipped in alternate years to maintain their tall, domed canopies. Also in the grounds is a small yew with a tangle, convoluted growth habit – in direct contrast to its upstanding companions.
