Inveraray Castle overlooks the shores of Loch Fyne and building commenced in 1743, replacing a 15th century castle. It has been the seat of the Dukes of Argyll ever since and is regarded as one of the most iconic and beautiful Gothic Revival style castles in Scotland. There are yews in the grounds of the castle which appear to be around 250 years old though that is not based on girth measurements but considering the history of the site.
Lining an old trackway leading to the castle from a burial ground is an avenue of over 30 yews with a probable origin in the mid to late 18th century, making them also 250 years old. It is noticeable how the damp climate has caused extensive moss growth on many of the trunks.
