This huge sprawling mass of a yew, on the banks of the river Gryffe in the middle of a housing estate, is said to be the largest layered yew in Scotland and is thought to be over 600 years old. Just above the base its girth measures over 800 cm which implies it could even be 800 years old and if so, may be connected to the Knights Templar, who were here at that time. Other yews also grow along the riverbank and are a few centuries old.
