Within the grounds of this privately owned castle eight magnificent yews grow in ordered lines around a lawn, although one of these is now enclosed within a chicken coop and has toppled over somewhat and can be described as a phoenix yew. Balbegno castle was built in 1488 on land granted by James IV. The Great Hall has a stunning sculpted vaulted roof which is still decorated with the discernible heraldy of sixteen Earls of Scotland who met in the hall to overthrow James Douglas, Earl of Morton who was Regent at the time. It is also noted that the motehill of Balbegno was the tribunal hill of the district in the long ages preceding the erection of the castle.
